1
Q

Alessya:

Who was it? I think we have a right to know.

A

All right! Who did it? What idiot changed their vote?

Q

Emma:

Is that the way to talk about a man’s life?

A

Whose life are you talking about? The life of the dead man or the life of a murderer?

Excuse me. This was a secret ballot.

A

No one looked while we did it, but now I want to know.

Q

Milton:

A secret ballot; we agreed on that point, no? If the lady wants it to remain a secret…

A

What do you mean? There are no secrets in here! I know who it was. What’s the matter with you? You come in here and you vote guilty and then this slick cookie starts to tear your heart out with stories about a poor little boy who just couldn’t help becoming a murderer. So you change your vote. If that isn’t the most sickening…

[angrily] [to Bibi] [to Emma]

Q

Jemi:

I agree with you that the boy is guilty, but let’s be fair.

A

Hold it? Be fair? That’s just what I’m saying. We’re trying to put a guilty man into the chair where he belongs and all of a sudden we’re paying attention to fairy tales.

Milton:

That is the reason I came here. I wanted to have the right to disagree.

Do you disagree with us?

Q

Alesya:

Yes, let’s stick to the subject. I want to ask you, what made you change your vote?

[to Bibi]

A

I want to know, too. You haven’t told us yet.

And then on the other hand some killers get turned loose and they go and do it again. They squeeze out on some technicality and kill again.

A

Look, hon’, now that we’ve kind of cooled off, why - ah - I was a little excited a minute ago. Well you know how it is - I didn’t mean to get nasty. Nothing personal.

Remember, it is “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.” This is an important thing to remember.

Everyone’s a lawyer. Supposing you explain to us what your reasonable doubts are.

This is not easy. So far, it’s only a feeling I have. A feeling. Perhaps you don’t understand.

No. I don’t.

Q

Ros:

A feeling! What are we going to do, spend the night talking about your feelings? What about the facts?

A

You took the words right out of my mouth. Look, the old man heard the boy yell, “I’m gonna kill you.” A second later he heard the father’s body falling, and he saw the boy running out of the house fifteen seconds after that.

That’s right. And let’s not forget the woman across the street. She looked into the open window and saw the boy stab his father. She saw it!

The woman saw the killing through the windows of a moving elevated train. The train had five cars and she saw it through the windows of the last two cars. She remembers the most insignificant details.

A

Well, what have you got to say about that?

Well supposing you think about it. Want to see the pattern for a crocheted skirt my daughter sent me? It doesn’t look very hard.

Q

Orla:

How about sitting down?

A

“This isn’t a sewing circle.” Who does she think she is?

24
Q

Emma:

The old man who lived downstairs heard the boy say -

A

He didn’t say it, he screamed it.

[interrupting]

25
Q

Emma:

The old man would have had to hear the boy say, “I’m going to kill you,” while the front of the el was roaring past his nose. It’s not possible that he could have heard it.

A

What do you mean! Sure, he could have heard it.

26
Q

Emma:

With an el train going by?

A

He said the boy yelled it out.

27
Q

Emma:

An el train makes a lot of noise.

A

It’s enough for me.

28
Q

Bibi:

Maybe the old man didn’t hear it. I mean with the el noise…

A

What are you talking about? Are you calling the old man a liar?

29
Q

Bibi:

Well it stands to reason-

A

You’re crazy. Why would he lie? What’s he got to gain?

30
Q

Rose:

Attention… Maybe.

A

You keep coming up with these bright sayings. Why don’t you send one in to a newspaper? They pay two dollars.

31
Q

Rose:

No, he wouldn’t really lie. But perhaps he’d make himself believe that he heard those words and recognised the boy’s face.

A

Well - that’s the most the fantastic story I’ve ever heard. How can you make up a thing like that?

[loud and brassy]

32
Q

Rose:

I’m not making it up.

A

You must be making it up. People don’t lie about things like that.

33
Q

Rose:

He made himself believe he told the truth.

A

What do you know about it?

34
Q

Emma:

Now - there’s something else I’d like to point out here. I think we proved that the old man couldn’t have heard the boy say, “I’m going to kill you.”

A

Well, I disagree.

35
Q

Annie:

The old man was murdered.

A

One thing more. The phrase was “I’m going to kill you.” And the kid screamed it at the top of his lungs.

36
Q

Jemi:

That’s the way I understand it.

A

Now don’t try and tell me he didn’t mean it. Anybody says a thing like that the way he said it - they mean it.

37
Q

Bibi:

I think there’s a doubt.

A

Where? What is the doubt?

[turning abruptly from the window, shouting]

38
Q

Maya:

I heard you.

A

All right. What’s this one for? How come you’re the only one in the room who wants to see exhibits all the time?

[stepping away from window, moving a few steps toward Emma]

39
Q

Rose:

So do I.

A

And I want to stop wasting time.

40
Q

Emma:

We’re not. We’re going to find out how a man who’s had two strokes in the past three years, and who walks with a pair of canes, could get to his front door in fifteen seconds.

A

He said twenty seconds.

41
Q

Bibi:

He said fifteen.

A

How does he know how long fifteen seconds is? You can’t judge that kind of thing.

42
Q

Rose:

He said fifteen. He was very positive about it.

A

He’s an old man. You saw that. Half the time he was confused. How could he be positive about - anything? Well, ah - you know.

[angrily][looks around sheepishly, unable to cover her blunder]

43
Q

Jemi:

I don’t see why not.

A

He would have been in a hurry. He did hear the scream.

44
Q

Milton:

He can only walk very slowly. They had to help him into the witness chair.

A

You make it sound like a long walk. It’s not.

45
Q

Rose:

For an old man who uses canes, it’s a long walk.

A

What are you doing?

[to Emma]

46
Q

Emma:

I want to try this thing. Let’s see how long it took him. I’m going to pace off twelve feet - the length of the bedroom.

A

You’re crazy. You can’t re-create a thing like that.

47
Q

Milton:

Perhaps if we could see it - this is an important point.

A

It’s a ridiculous waste of time!

[angrily]

48
Q

Milton:

This is, I think, even more quickly than the old man walked in the courtroom.

A

No, it isn’t.

49
Q

Bibi:

Fifteen - twenty - thirty - thirty-five - thirty-nine seconds, exactly.

A

That can’t be!

50
Q

Orla:

I think that’s possible.

A

Assumed? Now, listen to me, everyone. I’ve seen all kinds of dishonesty in my day - but this little display takes the cake.

[infuriated]

51
Q

Emma:

What dishonesty?

A

Tell her! You come in here with your heart bleeding all over the floor about slums and injustice and you make up these wild stories, and you’ve got a couple of soft-hearted sob sisters listening to you. Well, I’m not. I’m sick of it all. What’s the matter with you people? This boy is guilty! He’s got to burn! We’re letting him slip through our fingers…

[to Jemi][strides to Emma][to all]

52
Q

Emma:

Our fingers? Are you his executioner?

A

I’m one of ‘em!

[raging]

53
Q

Emma:

Perhaps you’d like to pull the switch.

A

For this good-for-nothing? You bet I’d like to pull the switch!

[shouting]

54
Q

Emma:

I’m sorry for you.

A

Don’t start with me!

[shouting]

55
Q

Emma:

What it must feel like to pull the switch!

A

Shut up!

56
Q

Emma:

You’re a sadist…

A

Shut up!

[louder]

57
Q

Emma:

You want to see this boy die because it would satisfy you personally - not because of the facts. You disgust me.

A

Will you shut up! Let me go! I’ll kill her! I’ll kill her!

[shouting][lunges at Emma]
