Act 1 Scene 5 Flashcards
[A moment later, SETH LORD renters with MOTHER LORD, one of his arms around her shoulder]
You’re looking very stylish today, Margaret
Mother: Tracy! Tracy…
It’s fine. Let her
Tracy: Oh, oh, that’s wonderful
Tracy, I am sorry that I hurt you
Tracy: Tracy-
It’s all right
Tracy: For you it’s alright
Tracy, the affair has been over for a long time now…
Tracy: Really? How long?
Since winter
Tracy: Well, that’s an interesting little piece of news. (To Mother Lord) When did you find that out?
Your mother has known it almost as long
Mother: If Seth does move back, there has to be more to it than just the end of an affair.
Tracy: Oh, really?
Yes, Tracy. A lot more
Mother: And he’s been working on it
We both have
Tracy: Have you? Well that’s just wonderful. Now I understand it all
But you don’t, do you?
Mother: Tracy, what your father and I are going through is not easy for either one of us, but at least we’re facing it
Tracy look at me… Look at me!
I make no excuses for what I’ve done because there aren’t any. And what is more, I take full blame, if blame is in fact appropriate - I rather suspect it is
Mother: Tract, stop it!
Let her be.
It’s useless, isn’t it?
Tracy: It is, yes. Now you’ve got it. Finally, you’ve got it
And you’ve got what I’m afraid to say you’ve always had
Tracy: And what exactly does that mean
It means you have everything it takes to make a great human being… except…
Tracy: No, no. Go on, say it. It’s been that kind of day
You have everything it takes except the one essential - an understanding heart. And without that, you might as well be made of bronze, like a statue.
