Act 1, Scene 3 Flashcards

1
Q

Why is it tragic that the fool wasn’t in act 1 scene 1?

A

He acts as the King’s advisor therefore if he had been in act 1 scene 1 he may have been able to prevent Lear acting the way he did, perhaps preventing him from splitting his kingdom the way he did and getting rid of all his power

Q

What key quote by Goneril shows her disgust with Lear, therefore a breakdown of love and why is this significant?

A

‘He flashes into one gross crime or other that sets us all at odds. I’ll not endure it. His knights grow righteous and he upbraids us’ - the hyperbolic language here emphasises this loss of love between Lear and Goneril which is of significance as it foreshadows Lear’s tragic isolation
