act 1 scene 3 Flashcards
“the valiant…
moor” 1ST SENATOR
Othello is clearly respected by those above him, demonstrating that he has clearly worked hard for this station of respect as a moor in venetian society.
“by spells and..
medicines” BRABANTIO
Reintroducing the idea of witchcraft as he refuses to believe that his own blood would betray him in such a disrespectful way.
“I won…
his daughter” Othello
calm and respective, however “won” suggests that she is a prize.
“a maiden….
never bold” BRABANTIO
Views his daughter in the stereotypical view of an Elizabethan woman-weak and submissive.
“against all the rules…
of nature” BRABANTIO
Xenophobia and racism is so engrained into society that its viewed as wrong that Othello and Desdemona are to be together. Perhaps its due to the mixed race grandkids they would be birthing.
“to vouch this…
no proof” DUKE
Duke acts as a mediator between Brabantio and Othello, however ultimately sides with Othello by not taking Brabantio’s side.
“my noble…
father” DESDEMONA
First time we meet Desdemona and she seems to be subservient- a typical venetian woman.
“i had rather to adopt a child…
than get it” BRABANTIO
Feels forced to give his blessing, despite having the opportunity previously- betrayal makes him believe he kids should be locked up”
“she has deceived her father…
and may thee” BRABANTIO
Foreshadows later on in the play in a sense, even though Des never betrayed Othello, it could be used by Othello in his reason for believing Iago.
“my life upon her faith…
honest Iago” Othello
Swears all his trust in Desdemona which is ironic as when she tells him the truth about not cheating on him he don’t believe her. Their relationship is not as strong as they thought. Honest Iago is also another time we see duplicity.
“I will incontinently….
drown myself” RODERIGO
We begin to see the power that Iago has over Roderigo, especially as Roderigo now seems weak and indecisive and desperate.
“come, be a man…
Drown thyself? Drown cats ears and blind puppies”
IAGO
Iago’s dominance plays on Roderigo’s weak character. Plays on what Roderigo needs.
“It cannot be that Desdemona should long continue…
her love to the moor” IAGO
Very derogatory and misogynistic towards women.
“put money…
in thy purse” IAGO
Imperative verbs painting him to be dominant. Also a confident and manipulative character.
“i hate…
the moor” IAGO
DUPLICIOUS. Iago has been nice to Othello’s face, however we see him plotting against him behind his back.
