What are the two purposes of a prologue?
The two purposes of a prologue is to provide the reader with background information/backstory on the main character. Furthermore, it also gives small hints/foreshadows a small part of what may happen in the future of the story.
What do we learn about Dracula in the prologue?
In the prologue, we learn that Dracula lived his long life of eternity, in solitude. He was longing for a companion , to run as wolves, to feel hunger, and silent longing with someone.
What’s the definition of soliloquy?
A soliloquy is a speech made by an actor to him/herself alone on stage. It’s used to impart knowledge to the audience, or to reveal the character’s true motives.
What are the two functions of a soliloquy?
The purpose of a soliloquy is for the character to express their inner thoughts and feelings that are not intended to be heard or known by other characters in the play or the audience members. Furthermore, it also puts light on the external relationships, thoughts, and the future actions related to the character and to the other characters of the drama.
Definition of a symbol?
The definition of a symbol is a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process. It represents something, like the mocking jay in the Hunger Games.
An example of any symbol from act 1 and its significance:
An example of a symbol is the Crucifix. It represents Jesus Christ, how he died for all of our sins, how he sacrificed himself. In the play, it’s used as meaningless means of protection, because Jonathan had lost it after it was given to him by the Landlady. The Landlady had given it to Jonathan after she learned that he was going to journey to the Counts home.
What’s the significance of St. George’s eve?
On St. George’s Eve, it was said that the evil things of the world would sway. That the house he was going to, had many dead in it’s room, how it has eaten much blood. The warning was evident in this one, that in their land, Dracula was feared, and that it wasn’t wise to go there or you would be in danger.
An example of foreshadowing in act 1 and what it suggests will happen next:
An example of foreshadowing is on pg 20 “In the distance, I heard wolves howling.” … “Her face is hidden by a hood.”:
This shows that if this was one of the many evil things in this world, in this land, that even something that Dracula was able to scare easily was something that Jonathan couldn’t handle. It showed that it was even more dangerous for Jonathan, because he had no idea how to react in this situation. He couldn’t fight the girl, and he can’t fight Dracula. The girl ran away because Dracula frightened her, because she knew she couldn’t win in a battle with him, which shows what a formidable opponent he is. It foreshadowed that the worst was yet to come.
One way Jonathan finds out Dracula is a vampire:
One way that Jonathan learns that Dracula is a vampire because he admitted that he will keep Jonathan here, and eat/drink his blood, and feed not only on him but Mina too. After that, Jonathan put two and two together once he realized that he had never seen Dracula walk in the daylight, he avoided bright places.
Who’s Mr. Swales?
Mr. Swales, is an old man who befriends Lucy and Mina at Whitey. He later dies, but the significance of his character was to show the importance of death. How he mentioned that he could die at any time, that he wished to look at death in whatever form it takes, grinning. Somehow bittersweet. I think that even though he wasn’t able to warn the girls clearly, about the evil coming, he still somehow foretold that something bad was coming, that evil had arrived, even though he was not a superstitious person.
