Who is the main protagonist of A Doll’s House?
Nora Helmer.
Who is Nora’s husband and what is his position?
Torvald Helmer, a high-ranking bank worker.
How is the stage described at the start?
An ideal and comfortable family home, typical of an upper-middle class family of the time.
What is happening at the start of the act?
Nora has just returned from the shops with a Christmas tree and presents, and is secretly eating macaroons.
What does Torvald playfully accuse Nora of?
Overspending at the shops and buying sugary food.
What do we learn about the Helmer’s financial situation?
They were very poor before but, due to Torvald’s promotion, are due to make much more money.
Who shows up next?
Mrs Linde and Dr Rank.
What is Mrs Linde’s backstory?
She was in a loveless marriage and is now having to work (very strange for a woman at the time) as she is a widow.
What does Nora reveal to Mrs Linde?
She took out loans illegally to pay for a holiday to ‘save her husband’s life’.
Why has Mrs Linde come?
To ask Torvald for a job at the bank.
Who shows up next?
Krogstad.
What does Dr Rank reveal about Krogstad?
He committed a crime but was never convicted.
What happens when Krogstad finds Nora alone?
He threatens to reveal that she took loans from him illegally if she doesn’t make sure he keeps his job over Mrs Linde.
