Act 1 Flashcards
- [1] “Six years later”…
Mr. DiPenna! …. Mr. DiPinna, will you bring up one of those new sky rockets please? I want to show them to Mrs. Sycamore. Look, Penny. What do you thing of these little firecrackers we just made? We can sell ‘em 10 strings for a cent. Listen. Nice, huh?
- [2] Yes. Paul, dear, were you ever in a monastery?
No, I wasn’t. Wait until you see the new sky rockets. Gold stars, then blue stars, and then bombs, and then a balloon. Mr. DiPinna thought of the balloon.
- [3] Sounds lovely. Did you do that all today?
Sure! We made up— Oh, here we are.
Look, Penny. Costs us 18 cents to make and we sell ‘em for 50. How many to you recon we can make before the Fourth of July, Mr. DiPinna?
- [4] Well, we’ve got two weeks yet–what day are you going to take the stuff up to Mount Vernon?
About a week. You know, we’re going to need a larger booth this year. Got a lot of stuff made up. Come on, we’re not through yet.
- [5] Look, Mr. Sycamore. I’m afraid the powder chamber is just a little bit close to the balloon.
Well, we’ve got the stars and the bombs in between.
- [6] But that don’t give the balloon time enough. A balloon needs plenty of time.
Come on– come on. let’s go down in the cellar and try it.
- [7] Believe I’ll have another love dream.
Mr. DePinna was right about the ballon. Tt was too close to the powder.
- [8] Want a Love Dream, Father? They’re on the table.
No, thanks. I gotta wash.
- [9] I’m going back to the war play, Paul.
Oh, that’s nice. We’re putting some red stars after the bombs and then the ballon. That ought to do it.
- [10] I don’t know, it’s so handy—just around the corner.
Oh, Donald! Mr. DePinna and I are going to take the stuff up to Mount Vernon next week. Do you think you could give us a hand?
- [11] Yes, sir, only I can’t take no money for it this year, because if the Government finds out I’m working they’ll get sore.
Oh! Ed, I got a wonderful idea in the bathroom just now. I was reading Trotsky. It’s yours, isn’t it?
- [12] Who is it?
You know, Trotsky. The Russian Revolution.
- [13] Oh.
Anyhow, it struck me it was a great fireworks idea. Remember The Last Days of Pompeii.
- [14] Oh, yes. Palisades Park. That’s where we met.
Well, I’m going to do the Revolution.! A full hour display.
- [15] The red fire is the flag, huh?
Sure! And the Czar, and the Cossacks!
- [16] And the freeing of the slaves?
No, no, Donald—the Russian Revolution… Hello, Grandpa.
- [17] Yes’m… Rheba, Grandpa’s home… we can have dinner.
We made a new skyrocket today, Grandpa. Wait till you see it.
- [18] Evening, Mr. DePinna.
Didn’t we make a fine skyrocket today, Mr. DePinna?
- [19] We certainly did.
Wonder why they don’t have fireworks at Commencements?
- [20] Father?
No, thanks.
