ACSM CEP Flashcards
Human lifespan stages
childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, old age
childhood
infancy (2 years old) to 10-12 years
normal BMI range
5th-84th percentile
underweight BMI
< 5th percentile
overweight BMI
85th-94th percentile
obesity
> /= 95th percentile
ACSM physical activity recommendations for children and adolescents
At least 60 minutes/day of MVPA on at least 5 days/week; double the recommendation for adults
resting metabolic rate (RMR)
amount of energy consumed by cellular activity while a person is awake and lying quietly; resting energy expenditure; sum of energy consuming processes (e.g., maintenance, transport, and repair activities)
what happens to children’s RMR as they grow?
total RMR (in kcals or kJ) increases in proportion to body size; relative (kcal per kg body mass) declines rapidly through childhood and into adulthood
cardiorespiratory fitness
aerobic; highest rate of oxygen consumption during exercise (VO2max); typically measured in lab settings during exercise tests
bone mineral density trends in childhood
increases rapidly; does not differ much between boys and girls until adolescence; total bone size increases
adolescence
period of physical and cognitive development between the onset of puberty and the attainment of adulthood, beginning around age 10-12 extending to 18-21
puberty
development of sexual maturity; typically complete by age 17
patterns of sports participation in adolescents
1) consistently little or no sports activity
2) initially high level but falling toward level 1 group by age 17-19
3) initially high level that was maintained through age 17 before declining moderately
RMR changes in adolescent
absolute value increases but relative value declines
