ACOUSTICS Flashcards
The science and engineering of achieving a good sound within a building
Also a branch of acoustical engineering
ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS/ BUILDING ACOUSTICS
US physicist who founded the science of architectural acoustics
WALLACE CLEMENT SABINE
The word “acoustics” comes from:
Greek word - AKOUSTIKOS, meaning “of or for hearing”
All acoustics situations have three common elements:
SOURCE, TRANSMISSION PATH, RECEIVER
This science analyzes noise transmission from building exterior envelope to interior and vice versa.
BUILDING SKIN ENVELOPE
The science of limiting and/or controlling noise transmission from one building space to another to ensure space functionality and speech privacy
INTER-SPACE NOISE CONTROL
The science of controlling a room’s surfaces based on sound absorbing and reflective properties
INTERIOR SPACE ACOUSTICS
Building services noise control is the science of controlling noise produced by:
- HVAC
- elevators
- electrical generators positioned within or attached to a building
- any building service infrastructure component
MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT NOISE
