Acids Tests & Chemical Equations Flashcards
What is sulfuric acid
H2SO4. ( both numbers down below the line)
Formula for sulfate- with charge
SO4. (4 below) charge is -2
Nitric acid
HNO3 ( number down below)
Formula for nitrate with charge
NO3 (3 below). -1 charge
Carbonate formula with charge
CO3 2- ( 3 below line)
Formula for hydroxide
OH (-1 charge)
Acid + Metal ->
Salt + hydrogen
Acid + Base ->
Salt + Water
Acid + Carbonate ->
Salt + Water + carbon dioxide
(A)Nitrate + (B) chloride ->
(B)Nitrate + (A)Chloride
(A)Oxide + (B)
(B)Oxide + (A) where B is higher up in the reactivity series than A
A + Oxygen ->
A Oxide, where A is a metal that corrodes or rusts
Group 1 Metal + Water ->
Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
Why does sodium have a +1 charge
During a reaction, it looses it’s single electron in the outer shell to the other atom- the sodium now has 1 more proton than electron, giving it a +1 charge
State why reacting Magnesium Oxide and copper will not work (displacement reaction)
Magnesium is higher up in the reactivity series, meaning copper can’t “steal” the oxygen from it
State the charge on group 2 metals
