Acids, Bases + Neutrals Flashcards
What are acids , bases + neutrals (3)
- make up great part of our daily lives + found everywhere
- Tasting is best way to determine
- dangerous to taste everything
What are indicators (1)
Indicators indicate weather a substance is an acid, base or a neutral.
What is litmus (3)
- Litmus is the most common indicator
- it originated from a certain fungus
- you use strips of paper called litmus paper
What is litmus paper (5)
- have red and blue litmus paper
- if the red turns blue = base
- if the blue turns red = acid
- it’s important to test both, if the red is blue and the blue stays blue it’s a base
- if the red stays red and blue stays blue it’s a neutral
What is pH (2)
- pH stands for power of hydrogen
- it’s the consentration of hydrogen particles
What is the pH scale (6)
- it indicates hiw strong an acid or base is
- the scale ranges from 0-14
- The lower on the scale, the more acidic
- if its lower like 1 (battery acid) its very acidic
- if it’s higher like 13 (oven cleaner) it’s a strong base
- if the ph is 7 it’s a neutral
Give e.g. of acids (3)
- lemon juice
- vinigar
- stomach acids
Discuss the properties of an acid (3)
-The taste is sour •shouldn’t taste everything - The texture is course •don’t rube everything can damage your skin - Can cause corrosion
Give e.g. of bases (3)
- oven cleaner
- toothpaste
- cleaning substances
Discuss the properties of a base (4)
-The taste is bitter
- The texture is slippery
•when you rub it it is smooth and soapy
-Can cause oxidation
Discuss neutrals (6)
-Neutrals have a pH of 7
•e.g. water
•cooking oil
•sugar/salt solutions
-acids + bases can neutralize eachother if mixed at the right ratio
- e.g. toothpaste (base) neutralizes the acids in your mouth from food
What is a compound (4)
- 2/+ substances that are chemically bound
- have their own unique properties [ not those of the original substances ]
- can be broken down with chemical reactions
- but not to always to original substances
