Acids, Bases and salts Flashcards
acid
substances that taste sour
comes from the Latin word “acere” meaning sour
ex - curd, lemon juice, vinegar
Base
substances that tastes sour and feels soapy
the nature of it is basic - hence the name
ex - soap, sugar, baking soda
Indicators
Special type of substances to test whether a substance is acidic or basic
ex - tumeric, litmus,china rose
Litmus
most commonly used natural indicator extracted from lichen PURPLE LITMUS SOLUTION - turns into red with acid turns into blue with base RED LITMUS PAPER- no change with acid turns blue with base BLUE LITMUS PAPER- turns red with acid no change with base
neutral solutions
these substances are neither basic or acidic
Turmeric as an indicator
is yellow in color
remains yellow with acid and neutral substances
turns bright red with base
China rose as an indicator
turns dark pink with acid
turns green with base
neutralization
the reaction between an acid and a base
salt and water are produced with heat
Indigestion
stomach contains hydrochloric acid
too much acid causes indigestion
to help we take antacid like milk of magnesia which has base
Ant Bite
ant injects acidic liquid while biting
the effect can be neutralized by rubbing moist baking soda(sodium hydrogen carbonate)
soil treatment
excessive use of chemical fertilizers makes the soil acidic and the plant doesnt grow well
farmers add quick lime(calcium oxide)
if the soil is too basic organic matter or fertlizers are added
Acetic acid
Vinegar
Formic acid
ant bite
citric acid
citrus fruits
lactic acid
curd
