Acids, Bases And PH Flashcards
Acid + base?
Salt and water = neutralisation
Strong acids?
Hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric
usually complete dissociation
HCl and benzene?
HCl dissolves in benzene, an organic solvent. It is not acidic because benzene is non polar and doesn’t ionise H+
What is the equilibrium constant?
Ka = [OH-] [H+] / [A-]
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water
What are some insoluble bases?
CuO and MgO
What is an alkali example?
KOH
What are some strong bases?
K, Na, Ca, Ba and Li
What are amphoteric bases?
They show characteristics of acids and bases [Al(OH3)]
What is the PH scale?
pH = -log[H+]
[H+] = 10^pH
measures the acidity of a solution
What is the ionisation of water?
H2O + H2O = H3O+ + OH-
only a small proportion does this
What is the ionic product of water?
Kw - at 25 degrees kw =
[H+][OH-] = 1.0 x 10^-14 mol^2 L^-2
What is the PH of seawater?
8.2
What do buffers do?
They resist changes in pH
weak acid + its salt
weak base + its salt
