Acids, Bases and pH Flashcards
What is a bronsted-lowery acid?
A proton donor - something that gives up H+
What is a bronsted-lowery base?
Proton aceptor - something that accepts H+
What does the dissociation of acids and bases in water depend on?
The amount of dissociation depends on how strong the acid or base is. stronger acids and bases dissociate the most/ almost completely
What has to be present in order for an acid to dissociate?
A base that is ready to accept the dissociated H+ ions
What does water dissociate into
hydroxodium ions and hydroxide ions
H20 + H20 –> H30+ + OH-
where does the equilibrium lie for H20 + H20 –> H30+ + OH- and why?
Water only dissociates a tiny amount so the equilibrium lies more to the left where there is the H20
what is the kc value of water under standard conditions known as
Kw
