Acids, bases and indicators Flashcards
Define an acid
- Dissolves in water to form hydrogen ions as the only positive ions.
- Sour taste
- Reacts with a base to form salt and water only
Define a base
- dissolve sin water to form hydroxide ions as the only negative ions.(solutions have a soapy feel)
- Bitter taste
- Neutralize acids to form salt and water only.
Bases that are soluble in water are known as
Alkalis
What is indicator?
A substance that shows one definite color in basic solution and a different definite color in acidic solution.
State 2 types of indicators
- simple acid-base indicators extracted from flower petals by crushing them, dissolving in acetone and filtering the mixture.
- Commercial indicators
procedure for making a simple acid-base indicator
- crush petals in a mortar using a pestle.
- add a solvent(propanone or ethanol)
- decant to obtain the indicator
Do commercial indicators show the strength of acids and bases?
No, they show the same color for all acids and the same color for all bases
What are neutral substances?
neither basic nor acidic
What is universal indicator
type of commercial indicator that shows a range of colors depending on the strength of the acid or base
Universal indicator and strong acids show what color?
bright red
Universal indicator and alkalis/bases show what color?
purple/violet
0-3 on the pH chart indicates
strong acids
4-6 on the pH chart indicates
weak acids
7 on the pH chart indicates
neutral
8-10 on the pH chart indicates
weak alkali
