Acids and Redox Flashcards
Hydrogen Ion
is commonly used to mean H+ as it has no electrons in it’s outer shell and is commonly known as a proton
Acid
in water an acid releases hydrogen ions into a solution
strong acid
releases all of its hydrogen ions into the solution and is completely ionised
weak acid
a weak acid only releases a small number of its hydrogen ions in the solution and only partly ionises
base
a compound that neutralises in an acid by accepting an hydrogen ion in becoming a salt
alkali
a type of soluble base that releases hydroxide ions
salt
a product of a reaction in which there H+ ions from the acid are replaced by an acid or ammonium
Standard solution
A solution with a known concentration
oxidation states
a measure of electrons that an atom uses to bond with an atom of another element
uncertainty
half of the smallest possible unit you can make
redox reaction
a reaction including reduction and oxidation
disproportionation
where an element is both oxidised and reduced in the same reaction
oxidation
the loss of electrons
reduction
gain of electrons
acid + alkali
makes
salt + water
