Acids and Bases - Salts from metals Flashcards
Do metals form acidic salts?
Salts that contain small, highly charged metal ions produce acidic solutions in water.
Are metal salts acidic or basic?
Acidic in nature
What is the definition of an acid?
A substance that gives up H+ ions (hydrogen) in a solution.
Define an alkali.
They form hydroxide ions in water/proton acceptors.
What is a salt?
A substance produced when an acid and a metal react or an acid and a base/alkali.
What do bases do?
They react with acids and neutralise them to make a salt and water
What happens when acids react with bases or alkalis?
a salt and water are made: acid + metal oxide → salt + water
acid + metal hydroxide → salt + water
Are all bases alkaline?
No an alkali is a soluble base not all bases can dissolve in water e.g. copper oxide.
What is an acidic solution?
A solution with a pH less than 7
What is an alkaline solution?
A solution with a pH more than 7
What is a proton donor?
An acid
What is the symbol equation for sulphuric acid + copper oxide —-> copper sulphate + water
H2SO4+CuO—>CuSO4+H2O
What happens when Acids react with reactive metals, such as magnesium and zinc?
It makes a salt and hydrogen: acid + metal → salt + hydrogen
What type of substance acts as a proton donor?
An acid
What type of substance acts as a proton acceptor?
An alkali
