Acids And Bases Flashcards
Alkali
A base that dissolves in water is called an alkali
Neutral
If something is neither an acid nor a base and has a pH of 7
Neutralisation
If an acid and base are mixed together in the right concentrations, then they neutralise each other. A salt and water are produced
Indigestion
Excess stomach acid, take an antacid (anti-acid) which is a base
A bee sting is acidic
Rubbing a base e.g. Bread soda will neutralise it
A wasp sting is alkaline
This needs to be treated with an acid e.g. vinegar
Acid
Turns blue litmus paper to red
Strong acid
Hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid
Weak acid
Vinegar, lemon juice, acid rain
Base
Turns red litmus paper blue
Alkali
Bases that are soluble in water e.g. drain cleaner
Strong base
Sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide
Weak base
Toothpaste, soap, window cleaner
Indicator
Changes colour to show if something is an acid or a base
pH7
Neutral
pH less than 7
Acid
pH greater than 7
Base
Titration
An experiment to neutralise an acid with a base.
The products of the titration
Are a salt and water
