Acids and Bases Flashcards
All acids in a solution form has _______ ions.
Hydrogen.
Taste of acids
Bitter (sour).
How would a solution be acidic?
If it has more hydrogen ions than hydroxide.
What would the pH be if the solution was neutral?
7.
Range of pH scale
1 - 14.
pH of what is acidic
Less than 7.
How many hydrogen and hydroxide ions are there if it is neutral?
Equal amounts of a number greater than 1.
pH level of what is basic?
More than 7.
How can you find out if a solution is acidic or basic?
Litmus paper or universal indicator.
What do the colours on litmus paper mean?
Red is acidic. Blue is basic. If the solution is neutral the paper will stay the same colour as original.
What can litmus paper tell us?
Litmus can only tell us if the solution is acidic or basic. It cannot tell yes its pH. So it cannot tell us how acidic or how basic a given solution is.
What can universal indicator tell you?
Universal indicator gives a range of colours depending on the pH of the solution. The colour ranges from red to purple.
1 - 2
Red
3 - 4
Orange
5 - 6
Yellow
7
Green
8 - 9
Blue
10 - 11
Light purple
11 - 12
Dark purple
Acids when dissolved have ____
Hydrogen ions.
Bases when dissolved have ____
Hydroxide ions.
In general oxides and hydroxides of metals are ____
Bases
Alkai
Soluble bases
How are salts formed?
When the hydrogen from the acid is displaced by a metal.
Metals react with acids to give?
Salt and hydrogen gas (in general).
Formula of hydrochloric acid
HCl.
Formula of sulfuric acid
H2SO4
Formula of nitric acid
HNO3
Acids react with bases to give?
Salt and water.
