Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is the defenition of a Brønsted-Lowry acid/base?
Acid = proton donor
Base = proton acceptor
What is the defention of pH?
pH=-log10[H+}
What is the kw equation?
kw=[H+][OH-]
What is the equation for pKa?
pKa= -log10[ka]
What is the equation for an acid and water?
HA(aq) + H20(l)
Whats the equation for a base and water?
B + H20 → HB+ + OH-
What are the uses for pH?
Used in drugs; end products; blood; agriculture
How to work out ph or pOH if you only have one or the other
pH + pOH = 14
What do acidic buffers and basic buffers control?
Acidic buffers control H+ concentration. Basic buffers control OH- concentration
What is a buffer?
A buffer solutions is a solution which can resist a change in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added
What is an acidic buffer?
A weak acid (ethanoic acid) and the soluable salt of the acid (sodium ethanoate)
What is a basic buffer?
Weak base (amonia) and the soluable salt of the base (ammonium chloride)
