Acids And Bases Flashcards
Everyday acids
Can be in food such as lemon juice and vinegar and they have a sharp sour taste these are not dangerous
Laboratory acids
They are strong acids that are corrosive such as sulfuric acid
Bases:
Another group of chemicals they are the opposite of acids many are used everyday and they can be as corrosive and dangerous as acids e.g toothpaste and limewater
Alkalis
Some bases that dissolve in water e.g drain cleaner
Neutral?
Another group of substances that are neither acid nor base including water and salt solution they are said to be neutral
Indicators;
Is a chemical that shows by means of a colour change whether a substance is and acid or base
Indicator example
Litmus paper
Universal indicator
Litmus paper
Will change from blue to red in acids and from red to blue in bases
Universal indicator
Mixture of dyes that change to different colours according to how strong the acid or base is- give a value on the ph scale
The ph scale
0-7 acid
7 neutral
7-14 alkali
Neutralisation
When acids and bases are mixed together they react and neutralise or cancel each other they react to produce a salt and water
How is a neutralisation done
It is done by a acid base titration
Name acid and base used in and acid base tritation
Dilute sodium hydroxide
Dilute hydrochloric acid
Name equipment needed in an acid base tritation
Pipette
Pipette filler
Burette
White tile
