Acids and Bases Flashcards
1
Q
Acids and Bases according to Arrhenius Theory
A
Acids produce hydrogen ions (H+/H3O+/ hydronium ions) in aqueous solution. Bases produce hydroxide ions (OH-) in aqueous solution.
2
Q
Acids and Bases according to Lowry-Brønsted Theory
A
An acid is a proton (H+ ion) donor. A base is a proton (H+ ion) acceptor.
3
Q
Ampholyte or Amphiprotic Substance
A
A substance that can act as either acid or base, as amphiprotic or as an
ampholyte.
Example: Water
4
Q
Acid-base Indicator
A
An Acid-base Indicator is a weak acid, or a weak base, which colour changes as the H+
ion concentration or the OH- ion concentration in a solution changes.
