Acids And Bases Flashcards
What are examples of Acids
Stomach acid
Citrus fruits (lemons)
Vinegar
Car batteries
Acid rain
What are examples of Bases?
Blood
Baking soda
Drank
Egg whites
Bleach
Soap
Oven cleaner
What are Properties of Acids?
Corrosive
Conduct electricity
PH less than 7
Sour taste
Reacts with metals
What are Properties of Bases?
Corrosive
Conduct electricity
PH greater than 7
Bitter taste
Slippery, soapy
How do you distinguish Acids and Bases?
pH indicators are chemicals that change their colour based on the pH.
Examples: litmus paper
Methyl Orange
What do pH numbers mean?
Each step on the pH scale represents a “10-fold” incr awe or decrease in how acidic/basic something is.
What colour is bromothynol blue at pH of 5? 7? 9?
Bromothymol blue has a blue color when in basic conditions (pH over 7), a green color in neutral conditions (pH of 7), and a yellow color in acidic conditions (pH under 7).
