Acids and Bases Flashcards
Properties of Acids
- Tastes sour
- Conducts electricity in solutions
- Neutralize bases
- Turns litmus ppr red
- pH < 7
- Corrodes some metals
Properties of Bases
- Tastes bitter
- Conducts electricity in solutions
- Nutrelizes Acids
- Turns litmus ppr blue
- pH > 7
- Feels slippery
Arrhenius Acids
Anything that increases the concentration of H3O+ in water
Arrhenius Base
Anything that increases the concentration of OH- when dissolved in water
Naming acids
Based on their anion:
ide - hydro__ic acid —–> HCl - Hydrochloric acid
ate - __ic acid —–> H2SO4 - Sulfic acid
ite - __ous acid —–> H2SO3 - Sulfurous acid
(Bronsted-Lowery)
B/L Acids:
Give a (H+) proton
(Bronsted-Lowery)
B/L Bases:
Proton accepter
Stronger the acid…
the weaker the base and vis versa
Water is amphoteric…
can lose or gain an H+ (depending on if it’s w/ an acid or base)
0 14
pH: acidic, neutral, basic
pOH: basic, neutral, acidic
Self ionization of water
(H3O+)(OH-) = 1 x 10^-14
Solving pH and pOH
- log(H3O+)
- log(OH-)
Going from one to the other subtract 14
Solving (OH-) and (H3O+)
OH- = 10^-pOH
H3O+ = 10^-pH
Strong acids…
ionize completly
Weak acids….
ionize until they reach equilibrium
