Acids And Alkalis Flashcards
What type of solution do we get if we dissolve a substance in water?
Aqueous solution (aq)
Which ions are produced by acids when they are added to water?
Hydrogen ions. H+(aq)
What is a base
A base is a substance that can neutralise and acid. But is insoluble in water
What is an alkaline?
An Alkaline is a Base that can dissolve in water to make aqueous solutions.
How do you get an alkaline(aq)
Base+water
What does a base usually have?
Hydroxide OH(aq)
What do alkalises/soluble bases produce in a solution?
Hydroxide ions OH-(aq)
Acid+Metal==>
Salt+Hydrogen
What metals other than zinc can safely react with acids?
Any metal. >hydrogen but
Metal oxides and metal hydroxides are…
Bases
What is neutralisation?
When an acid reacts with a base. And salt and water are produced.
Acid+Base==>
Salt+Water
How do you form salt crystals IF the base is insoluble?
You get the metal or insoluble base and keep adding it to the acid until all of the acid has reacted
You then filter the mixture to separate the solid reactant until you are left with the salt solution
You then heat the solution until all of the water has evaporated and the salt crystallise
What are chlorides made from?
Hydrochloride acid
What are nitrates made from?
Nitric acid
