Acids and Alkali's Flashcards
Solutions can either be…
Acid, alkali or neutral
What is the pH of pure water?
7/neutral
What are some acids found in a lab?
Hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid
What are some acids found at home?
Lemon juice, vinegar, fizzy drinks
What are some alkalis found at home?
Indigestion tablets, baking soda, bleach, toothpaste
What are some alkalis found in the lab?
Sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide
How do you know if a substance is alkali?
It contains the word hydroxide, e.g potassium hydroxide
Why are universal indicators used?
They are used to find out whether a solution is acid, alkali or base
What different plants can be used to determine the pH of a solution?
Radish, red cabbage, red onion, rhubarb, blueberries
What colours do acidic, neutral and alkaline
Acid - Red
Neutral - Green
Alkaline/Base - Purple/blue
What is the pH of acids, alkalis, neutral solutions
acid - 0-6
neutral - 7
alkali - 8-14
very alkaline
pH - 12 -14
very acidic…
pH - 0-2
less acidic
pH - 3 - 6
less alkaline
pH - 8 - 11
What happens when carbon dioxide is dissolved in water?
It makes an acidic solution
Burning sulphur produces Sulphur Dioxide, what happens to this when it is dissolved into water?
It makes another acidic solution, this is also an example of acid rain
What is a neutralisation reaction?
It is when an acid and an alkali react with one another with correct proportions and neutralise, this makes a solution with the pH of 7
What is an example of neutralisation?
Hydrochloric acid is neutralised using sodium hydroxide
This makes sodium chloride (table salt) and water
Uses of neutralisation…
-Indigestion (too much stomach acid), use indigestion
tablets
-Wasp sting (alkali), use something acidic like vinegar
-Bee sting (acidic), use something alkaline like sodium
bicarbonate
