Acids and Alkali Flashcards
What is an acid?
A substance with a pH less than 7 which dissociates itself from H+ ions in solution.
It is a proton donor.
What is alkali?
Substance with a pH greater than 7 which forms OH- (hydroxide)s ions in solution.
It is a proton acceptor.
What increases the rate of reaction?
> Higher concentration
Higher surface area (using smaller particles)
Higher temperature
Indicators for titration.
thymolphthalein:
acid - colourless
alkali - pink
Acidic and basic oxides.
Acidic = non metal oxides
Basic = metal oxides
Neutral oxides.
N2O
CO
NO
Amphoteric oxides.
Behave as both acidic and basic.
Zinc oxide and aluminium oxide
What is the test for ammonia?
Ammonia gas turns red litmus paper blue.
What is the test for chlorine?
Chlorine gas turns damp litmus paper white(it bleaches it)
What is the test for hydrogen?
Hydrogen gas makes the lit splint pop.
What is the test for oxygen?
Re lights a glowing splint.
What is the test for sulphur dioxide?
Turns dump litums paper red.
What is redox reaction?
It a reaction where both reduction and oxidations ocur.
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is loss of electrons.
What is reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons.
