Acids, Alkalis and Salts Flashcards
Name some common laboratory acids:
- hydrochloric acid
- sulphuric acid
- nitric acid
Name some common laboratory alkalis:
- sodium hydroxide
- potassium hydroxide
- calcium hydroxide
What is an acid?
A species that produces H+ ions in solution.
What is an alkali?
A species that produces OH- ions in solution.
What is a base?
A substance that will neutralise an acid and doesn’t dissolve in water.
All alkalis are bases.
What is a salt?
A compound formed when the H+ ions of an acid are replaced by metal ions.
What is neutralisation?
A reaction in which the acidity or alkalinity of a mixture is removed.
What is the test for hydrogen?
Lit splint test.
Result: squeaky popping sound
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Bubbling through limewater test.
Result: makes the limewater cloudy
What is the test for oxygen?
Glowing split test.
Result: reignites splint
Name a base:
• copper oxide
acid + metal ->
salt + hydrogen
acid + alkali ->
salt + water
acid + base ->
salt + water
acid + carbonate ->
salt + carbon dioxide + water
