Acids & Alkalis Flashcards
And alkali is a base which dissolves in ……?
Water
Which ions makes solutions acidic?
H+ ions make solutions acidic
What is the reaction called between acids and bases?
Neutralisation
What is the word equation for neutralisation?
Acid + Base –> Salt + Water
What is the symbol equation for neutralisation in terms of H+ and OH- ions?
H+ + OH- –> H2O
What is the word equation when metals react with acids to give salts?
Acid + Metal -> Salt + Hydrogen
Why doesn’t copper react with dilutes acid’s?
Because it’s less reactive than hydrogen
What are the two word equations for neutralisation reactions
(Metal oxide)
(Metal hydroxide)
Acid + Metal oxide -> Salt + Water
Acid + Metal -> Salt+ Water
Hydroxide
What can you use of the salt you want to make is insoluble?
You can use a precipitation reaction
How are precipitation reactions are used with water?
Precipitation reactions can be used to remove poisonous ions such as lead from drinking water
What name is given to the type of reaction in which an acid reacts with the base?
Neutralisation
Which two substances are formed when an acid reacts with a metal such as Zinc?
A salt and hydrogen gas
Which two substances are formed when nitric acid reacts with carbon oxide?
Copper nitrate and water
Explain what you would do to make a dry sample of a soluble salt from an insoluble base
Add the insoluble base to an acid until the acid is neutralised and the Excess base can be seen on the bottom of the flask. Then filter out the excess base and evaporate off the water to leave a pure dry sample
Write down the word equation for the precipitation reaction between barium chloride and sodium sulphate
Barium chloride + sodium sulphate –> barium sulfate + Sodium chloride
