Acids Flashcards
1
Q
What is an acid?
A
A substance that forms aqueous solutions with a pH less than 7
- Because they ionise in aqueous solutions to release hydrogen ions (split or dissociate into their ions)
2
Q
What is a ‘strong’ acid?
A
They ionise completely
All acid particles will dissociate
3
Q
What are ‘weak’ acids?
A
They don’t fully ionise
Only a small portion of particles actually dissociate
4
Q
What does concentration mean?
A
How much acid there is in a certain volume
5
Q
What is the pH scale?
A
A measure of the concentration of H+ ions in a solution
6
Q
For a weak acid, does the position of equilibrium lie to the left or the right?
A
The left
7
Q
What describes the strength of an acid?
A
The proportion of acid molecules which dissociate into hydrogen ions
8
Q
How do you calculate conentration?
A
C = M/V
Concentration = Moles / Volume
