Acid reactions Flashcards
Acid characteristics
all contain at least one hydrogen ion, has a sour taste, conducts electricity when mixed with water, can neutralise bases and reacts with many metals
difference between weak and strong acids
weak acid do not easily give away hydrogen ions unlike strong acids making them corrosive
acid examples
vinegar, soft drink, hydrochloric acid HCI, nitrate acid and sulfuric acid
Bases characteristics
have a bitter taste, have a soapy feel to them, and bases that dissolve in water are called alkalis
different between strong bases and weak bases
weak bases are generally found in household cleaning products and strong bases are caustic and very harmful
bases example
sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and barium hydroxide
define salt
molecules that contain a metal cation and a non metal anion
acid reacting with bases
when acids and bases react they neutralise each other to form salt and water
acid reacting with bases example
hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide - sodium chloride + water
acid reacting with metal carbonates
water is produced so this is also called a neutral reaction, acid + carbonate - salt + water + carbon dioxide
acid reacting with metal carbonates example
citric acid + sodium bicarbonate - Sodium citrate + water + carbon dioxide
acid reacting with metal
when acids react with metals they produce hydrogen and salt and create a corrosion reaction
acid reacting with metal example
hydrochloric acid + magnesium - magnesium chloride + hydrogen
what does the pH tell us
a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
