Acid rain Flashcards
How is acid rain formed
Rainwater reacts with some of the carbon dioxide in the air to form carbonic acid
What is acid rain
Rain that is acidic, caused by pollution
How does acid rain affect the environment
Kills forest
Kills fish, frogs, water snails, insects and other aquatic life living in or around lakes. Increased acidity (decreased pH)
Can destroy buildings and sculptures, calcium carbonate (base) reacts with acid in rain.
How can acid rain be controlled
Taller chimneys, mean local areas less likely to be affected
Coal-fired power plants are now fitted with ‘scrubbers’ which remove sulfur - based pollutants from the gases they release.
water + carbon dioxide =
H2O + CO2
Carbonic acid
H2CO3
Sulphur + water + oxygen =
SO2 + H2O + O2
sulphuric acid
H2SO4
nitrogen dioxide + water =
2NO2⃣ + H2⃣O
nitrous acid + nitric acid
HNO2⃣ + HNO3⃣
