Acid base practical Flashcards
What is total protein?
Substances containing teo -CO-NH groups (i.e., peptide bonds) joined together directly or via a single carbon/nitrogen atom
Give a purple colour sith alkaline cooler solutions
What is albumin?
At pH 4.2 it acts as a cation to bind anionic dyed
Expand C¹V¹ = C²V²
C¹ = concentration of initial stock
V¹ = normally what we need, the amount of stock to be added to form a desired concentration
C² = final concentration
V² = final volume
What is acidosis?
Low blood pH
Addition of H+ to bodily fluids
What is alkalosis?
A rise in blood pH
Loss of H+ from bodily fluids
What does a high pCO² and low pH indicate?
Respiratory acidosis
What does a low pCO² and a high pH indicate?
Respiratory akalosis
What does a low HCO³ and a low pH indicate?
Metabolic acidosis
What does a high HCO³ and a high pH indicate?
Metabolic alkalosis
How to correct absorbance for the dilution factor?
Add 1/
E.g., 1/0.02 dilution factor = 50
So times absorbance by 50
(If a fraction, flip the fraction)
What does looking at HCO³ levels indicate?
Metabolic
What does looking at levels of pCO² indicate?
Respiratory
Which homeostatic mechanisms keep plasma pH in the normal range?
Renal system
Respiratory system
