Q

*If the anion gap is > 20, what process is taking place?

Q

How do you calculate delta gap?

A

anion gap - normal anion gap (12) + measured HCO3-

if total > 22-26==> AGMA

if < 22-26 ==> NAGMA

Q

*Why do you ALWAYS calculate the anion gap?

A

can be missing a metabolic acidosis, despite the normal pH

if anion gap > 20 –> metabolic acidosis

then calculate the delta gap ==> if large, there is also a metabolic alkalosis
