Acid -Base Disturbances Flashcards
1
Q
what pH does blood need to be between
A
pH 7.35 - 7.45
2
Q
WHat is a blood pH of less then 7.35 known as
A
Acidosis
3
Q
WHat is a blood pH of greater than 7.45 known as
A
Alkalosis
4
Q
Characteristics of metabolic acidosis
A
- decreased blood pH
- decreased bicarbonate conc
5
Q
3 causes of metabolic acidosis
A
- Increased metabolic production - lactic acid, ketoacidosis
- Ingestion of organic acids - toxins, methanol, ethylene
- Reduced renal excretion - decreased acid excretion, reduced bicarbonate retention in CKD
6
Q
Characteristics of metabolic alkalosis
A
- increased blood pH
- increased blood bicarbonate conc
7
Q
2 causes metabolic alkalosis
A
- Primary (Conn’s syndrome) or secondary aldosteronism (decreased renal blood flow)
- Loss of H+ ions - vomiting
8
Q
Characteristics of respiratory acidosis
A
- decreased blood pH
- increased CO2 concentration
9
Q
Cause of respiratory acidosis
A
Hypoventilation - drug use, neuromuscular disorders e.g: asthma
(breathing rate decreased = less CO2 excreted)
10
Q
Charcacteristics of respiratory alkalosis
A
- increased blood pH
- decreased CO2 conc
