Acid-Base Dissociation - Ch2 / L1 Flashcards
What is an acid
Acids form solutions with a pH < 7, as they donate H+ ions into an aqueous solution
What is a base
Bases form solutions with a pH > 7 that accept H+ ions form an aqueous solution
What is an alkali
Soluble bases with a pH > 7 that release OH- ions into an aqueous solution, generally hydroxides
What is a strong acid + examples
An acid that fully dissociates H+ ions into a solution - HCl (hydrochloric acid), HNO3 (nitric acid), H2SO4 (sulphuric acid)
What is a strong base + examples
A base that fully dissociates OH- ions into a solution - NaOH (sodium hydroxide), KOH (potassium hydroxide), Ba(OH)2 (barium hydroxide)
What is a weak acid + examples
An acid that partially dissociates H+ ions into a solution. It is a reversible reaction so both reactants and products are present - Any organic acid (mainly carboxylic acids)
What is a weak base + examples
A base that partially dissociates into a solution generating some OH- ions. It is a reversible reaction so both reactants and products are present - Ammonia and amines
