Acid-Base Balance Flashcards
What is normal pH for the human body?
7.35 - 7.45 pH
What is normal value for pCO2?
35-45 mmHg
What is normal value for HCo3?
21-28 mEq/L
What is pH?
How acidic or basic is something?
What is pH?
how acidic/basic something is.
What is pCO2?
Carbon Dioxide
What is HCO3?
Sodium BiCarb
What are ABGs?
Arterial Blood Gasses.
pH scale: 0 is ______; 14 is _______
0 is Acidic; 14 is Alkalotic
What is Metabolic acidosis?
Increase in the levels of non–carbonic acids or by the loss of bicarb from the extracellular fluid.
What is Metabolic alkalosis?
increase in bicarb concentration or from a loss of metabolic acids
What is Respiratory acidosis
- decreased ventilation
- resulting in hypercapnia (increased CO2 concentration) and increased carbonic acid concentration.
What is Respiratory alkalosis?
- alveolar hyperventilation
- resulting in hypocapnia (low CO2 levels) from excessive elimination of carbon dioxide or from decreases in carbonic acid concentration.
What is compensation?
Renal and respiratory adjustments, in response to primary changes
in pH.
What are the rules of acid-base relationships?
- CO2 is inverse of pH (PCO2 \ = / pH)
- Bicarb is direct relationship to pH ( /pH = / HCO3)
- Look for compensation from other variable.
