Acid and Bases Flashcards
What is the pH scale?
A measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is.
The lower the pH of a solution,the…..
more acidic it is
The higher the pH of a solution,the…..
the more alkaline it is
Can you give a example of acids?
Acid rain and lemon juice
Can you give examples of alkalis?
Bleach and soap powder
What’s a indicator?
A dye that changes colour depending on whether it’s above or below a certain pH.
What do some indicators contain and what does it mean?
A mixture of dyes, which means they gradually change colour over a broad range of pH.
What are wide range indicators and what are they useful for?
Indicators that gradually change colour over a broad range of pH.They are useful for estimating the pH solution, for example universal indicators gives the colour shown above.
What can a pH probe attached to a pH meter be used for and how is it used?
To measure pH electronically. The probe is placed in the solution you are measuring and the pH is given on a digital display as a numerical value, meaning it’s more accurate than an indicator.
What is an acid?
A substance that forms aqueous solutions with a pH of less than 7.
What do acids form?
H+ions in water
What is a base?
A substance with a pH greater than 7
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water to form a solution with a pH greater than 7.
What do alkalis form?
OH-ions in water
What is the reaction between acids and bases called and what is the formula?
Neutralisation.
acid+base=salt+water
