Accuracy And Precision Flashcards
Prime consideration in every measurement made
Accuracy and precision
Unavoidable in measurement due to several factors
Errors
Factors why error occurs
- The kind of measuring device use
- Methods in getting the measurements
- Condition under which measurement is made
Types of error
- Random error (unsystematic error)
- Systematic error
Error that has no pattern, inconsistent
Random error
Error that is consistent and repeatable due to the kind of measuring devices used. It is also due to flawed experimental design
Systematic error
Closeness or nearness of measurement to the accepted value. Express in terms of absolute error or percentage of error
Accuracy
Describes how closely measurements are to each other and how carefully measurements were made Agreement of several measurements made in the same way. Express in terms of deviation or percentage of deviation
Precision
Accuracy formula
AE= |O-A|
Where:
AE- absolute error
O- observed value
A- accepted value
Precision formula
AD= |O-M|
Where:
AD= absolute deviation
O- observed value
M- mean of several measurements
How to get percentage of error and accuracy
% of error= AE/A × 100%
% or accuracy= 100%- % or error
How to get percentage of deviation and precision
% of deviation = AD (ave)/ M × 100%
% of precision = 100% - % of deviation
