Acculturation (Miranda and Matheny) Flashcards
Intro Acculturation (Acculturation is defined as the process of psychological or cultural…)
Acculturation is defined as the process of psychological or cultural change that occurs as a result of contact between 2 or more different cultures, demonstrated by Berry’s model of Acculturation strategies (Assimilation, Integration, Separation, and Marginalization).
Assimilation (Berry)
Assimilation occurs when one adopts the norms or beliefs of a dominant culture in replacement of their own.
Integration (Berry)
Integration is when a person adopts both the dominant and their own culture.
Marginalization (Berry)
Marginalization is when one chooses not to adopt either culture.
Separation (Berry)
Separation occurs when one keeps their own culture rejecting the dominant.
Aim of Miranda & Matheny
Miranda and Matheny conducted a study to examine which socio-psychological factors accounted for acculturative stress in Latino adults immigrating to the US, and what factors could decrease the likelihood of experiencing this stress.
Sample of Miranda & Matheny
A random sample of 200 members was collected
Procedure of Miranda & Matheny
200 members were told to complete a questionnaire on topics such as their family cohesion, acculturation, acculturative stress, and any effective stress coping strategies.
Findings of Miranda & Matheny
The results found that factors like a good English speaking level, effective stress coping skills, and a strong bond to their family allowed immigrates to acculturate more successfully.
How does Miranda and Matheny link to acculturation?
Supports Berry’s model on how there are protective factors to aid immigrants in acculturating successfully by reducing emotional distress
