what is globalization
the process by which the worlds citizens (and nations) are becoming increasingly connected and interdependent.
what is interdependence
it is a mutual dependence among citizens and nations in social, political and economic ways
what is global trade
we benefit from goods that are imported from other countries, and may profit from export of our own goods to other nations.
what is transnational corporation
corporations that operate in two or more countries. ex: walmart, mcdonald’s
what is entertainment
music clothing, TV, movies and any other form of entertainment are all enjoyed and shared internationally
what is international agreements
gov’ts must follow international agreements and treaties, and they make political decisions to provide (or not provide) foreign aid to developing nations
what is democracy
the spread of democracy throughout the world is another form of political globalization
individual identity
characteristics and preferences that make everyone unique. ex: name, interests, personal characteristics
collective identity
refers to the characteristics that make us part of a larger group ex: religion, language, ethnicity
what is Canadian identity
Canada is a pluralistic (multiple) society, this means that our society is made up of different groups. Canada is also a multicultural society.
What is American identity
it is based on assimilation. immigrants are encouraged to leave behind their culture and identities to become ‘American’. this means America is a homogeneous society
what is language in Canada
language is important to identity. Canada is a bilingual (two) country. (french and english are both the official languages in Canada)
what are the positive and negative impacts of globalization on identity
positive- it can expose us to new ways of thinking and a variety of worldviews.
negative- it can increase pressure to conform
what is popular culture
contemporary lifestyle and items that are well known and generally accepted cultural patterns that are widespread within a population
what is universalized
when this same culture is experienced by a large number of people it becomes universalized or universal. (if something is universal it means it is experienced by most people in the same way)
what is transnational media advantages and disadvantages
advantages- the media they create provides entertainment
disadvantages- too much influence over the world
what is lack of diversity in media
pop culture is at risk of becoming increasingly homogenized or homogenous
what is hybridization
it occurs when people mix traditional arts, culture and method of communication in new ways.
what is cultural minorities
as globalization increases, the pressure of homogenization and assimilation can make it difficult for minorities to retain their traditional identities
what is homogenization
a trend towards uniformity, the process of becoming more similar
what is assimilation
the absorption of a minority group by a dominant group causing the minority group identity to disappear (forced to leave your own culture behind to become like the dominant group)
what is acculturation
(choosing to accept the dominant culture and leaving your own culture behind)
what is accommodations
a policy or some law that allows people to keep their culture while participating in another culture and identity
what is marginalization
pushing a group of people to the margins of society where they have little to political, social, or economic power. ex: reserves in the middle of nowhere. (pushing people to the side and kept away from society)
what is urbanization
is the process by which people move from rural areas to larger more densely populated areas ( urban- process of city, and city gets bigger)
what is cultural revitalization
a process through which unique cultures regain or reinforce a sense of collective identity, usually by promoting and/ or reviving traditions, customs, and languages. (renewing old cultures after assimilation and bringing them back from almost disappearing)
