Hard shoulder
LH Uses
- Accident and emergency
- Emergency vehicles getting through traffic
Object falls from vehicle
- Pull over to the hard shoulder
- Use an emergency telephone to report incident
- Don’t retrieve item yourself
Flat tire
- Grip steering wheel tightly
- Turn on hazard lights
- Pull over to hard shoulder and let vehicle roll to a stop
DO NOT BREAK
Warning lights
If displayed on dashboard, pull over when safe, use vehicle handbook for guidance
Highways England
Contacts emergency service and breakdown companies
SOS Telephone
Provide number on the phone for location, details of drivers, vehicles and breakdown companies, what happened
Accident on motorway
Turn on hazard warning lights and move over to hard shoulder
Warning triangle
If you’re not on the motorway place 45m behind vehicle

If you hit a property and the owner is absent
Contact the police within 24hrs
Breakdown on level crossing with flashing warning lights
-Everyone exit the car and clear of the crossing
-Use emergency phone to contact signal operator
-Push car only if instructed
Approach tunnel
- Remove sunglasses
- Switch on dipped lights
- Tune radio to frequency shown as will update on incidents within the tunnel
Stop in tunnel
Leave a safe distance between cars in front
- should be able to see tyres and tarmac
Fire safeguarding
Carry a fire extinguisher
Check out any smell of fuel
Don’t carry fuel cans
Fire in tunnel 1
Drive out if possible
Fire in tunnel 2
1.Turn on hazard lights,
2,turn of engine, use fire extinguisher,
3.call emergency phone,
4.use emergency exit to leave
If there is a collision while the vehicle is moving you MUST stop at the scene of the incident
Not breathing
1.Dial 999
2.Check that mouth is not blocked
3.Tilt head back to clear airways and check for 10 seconds - hold hand close to nose and mouth
Chest compressions
- Place heel of hand in centre of the chest
- Place hands on top of the other and interlock fingers
- push down by 5-6cm
- Repeat at 120bpm
- Administer 2 rescue breaths
Rescue breaths
-Head tilted backwords
-Pinch nostrils together
-Blow into mouth until chest rises
- Continue until casualty starts breathing or help arrives
Burns
Douse burn using clear non toxic liquid e.g. water
- Cool burn for at least 10 minutes
- don’t remove anything sticking to the burn
Bleeding
Check there is nothing in the wound - if there is leave it there
Apply pressure (around object) and raise above heart level
Shock signs
-Pale grey skin
- Sweating- rapid pulse
- Rapid shallow breathing
