Accessory Movements Flashcards
Precautions and Contraindications?
fractures, osteoporosis, joint inflammation, recent surgery, infection, tumours, vascular disease.
Say to patient “any fractures, recent surgery, any lumps you have noticed, no known issues with blood vessels?”
How to tell whether the measurement is normal?
resistance and quality of the movement
ROM and end feel
whether there is pain or muscle spasm
compare this to the other side
What are we measuring and why?
Identifying a symptomatic joint
Seeing if the joint motion is abnormal or restricted to indicate underlying joint dysfunction or pathology.
-Doing this to select a treatment to improve mobility and reduce pain
Principles when carrying out technique?
Get informed consent
Patient warmth, comfort and positioning
Isolate movement
Fix proximal and move distally
Apply force at right angle to joint
Make sure you are comfortable, safe and efficient
What structures/processes are being assessed?
Assess the mobility and function of tendons, muscles, ligaments, articular cartilage, synovial membrane and joint capsule
Definition?
Movements within a joint which a person can not actively perform, but can be performed on them by an external force
-They are required for normal movement
-If accessory movements are limited the ROM is often limited
Go through and perform the different Accessory movements for each joint
…
What are the 4 different forms of accessory movements?
Gliding (AP/PA/Medial/Lateral)
Distraction
Compression
Rotation
