A
- Country was divided religiously
- Crown finances were ruined by expensive wars against Scotland and France
- Coinage had been debased
- Crown had compromised its long term security by selling off monastic lands

A
- HVIII set up a regency council to govern when EVI was in his minority (made up of protestants and catholics)

Issues of succession
A
- HVIII in his will laid down that should EVI die without children, the throne should pass to Mary
- Feb 1553 : EVI was taken ill and there was a rapid decline in his health leading to his death in July 1593
- Northumberland came up with the Devyse
1. Mary and Elizabeth were both declared illegitimate and there were plans for a new succession line however EVI died before this was ratified - 9th July LJG was declared Queen
