Rule #3, homonyms
To separate homonyms.
Dé, de. Cómo, como. Mí, mi. Sí, si.
Rule #4, syllables
Syllables can have 2 vowels in it that make separate sounds but still one syllable. However, if the word needs it, you use an accent mark to separate 2 vowels that would otherwise be pronounced as one syllable into TWO SYLLABLES.
If it’s an i or u, the accent is written over those vowels and not the other one in the pair.
Día, reía, increíble.
Rule #5, question words
Question words ALWAYS have written accent when in the form of an interrogative, otherwise, leave them out! Tan fácil!
Cómo es que…?
Me gusta como…
Cuándo es la…?
Me gusta cuando…
Rule 6, accents are used for 1
Indicating where to add syllabic stress (emphasis), not for rising or falling tones, just emphasis!
Rule 7, accents are used for 2
Differentiating between homonyms, including verb tenses etc :)
Mí, mi. Dé, de. Hable, hablé. Cómo, como.
