Accent
-the way a person pronounces sounds based on where in the country they grew up
Dialect
-a way of speaking found in certain areas, words and grammar may be different
Slang
-language used in informal contexts that is widely recognised
Received Pronunciation
-the highest prestige accent, developed in 19th century its growth is associated with the public school system and Oxford and Cambridge
Standard English
-associated with written language and with vocab and grammar it has become the agreed standard lang of writing
Overt Prestige
-status that is publicly acknowledged
Covert Prestige
-status gained from peer group recognition rather than public acknowledgment
Convergence
-when we use lang to resemble that used by those around us
Divergence
-when we use lang to distance ourselves from others
Non-Standard English
-informal version of the lang which can change depending on where it is being spoken
Sociolect
-the dialect of a particular social class/group
Idiolect
-an individuals unique use of lang
