ACC: Theme of Redemption and Regret Quotes/ Analysis Flashcards
‘I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a schoolboy.’
1) The repetition of similes shows how happy and light-hearted he is becoming. There are lots of positive connotations and indicates a sense of Christian goodness comparing himself to an ‘ANGEL’
‘LIGHT AS A FEATHER’ suggests that he is free from his great burden of greed
2) Highlights his TRANSFORMATION and REDEMPTION as the similes used here contrast the simile used at the start where he is described as ‘solitary as an oyster’. 3) Dickens hopes that the reader will see the immense emotions scrooge is feeling as a result of his change and will be influenced to do the same.
He aims to teach the audience how easy it is to change and it’s never too late.
‘I should have like to have given him something that’s all’
1) This is the first time we see Scrooge show any form of positive emotion and it demonstrates that he sees his former self in that boy and is empathetic towards him. It appears as though scrooge’s past instinct for kindness has been ignited and he has an urge to be generous.
2) Scrooge experiences regret as he feels he should have been more generous and this is a positive beginning of a transformation.
3)
‘Spirit,’ with an interest he had never felt before, ‘tell me if Tiny Tim will live’.
1) Scrooge has an unconscious reaction of interest for Tiny Tim which shows the reader that he truly is changing his attitude. Contrasts his view at the start in stave 1 where he says to poor people ‘IF THEY’D RATHER DIE THEY HAD BETTER DO IT AND DECREASE THE SURPLUS POPULATION.’ displays his new attitude for the poor and vulnerable and shows he is now finally humanised them.
