What are plots?
Series of events that make up a story
What is a subplot?
Aa minor plot that relates in some way to the story
What is an inciting incident
The event that causes conflict
What is conflict?
A struggle between 2 opposing forces (external and internal)

What is climax?
The point in the story that creates suspense
What is exposition?
The introduction of a story or book when the characters and setting are first described
What is theme/centeral idea?
An insight or idea about life
What is a protaganist?
Mian character in a peice of literature
What is a Antagonist?
Another character opposing the protagonist
What is mood?
Overall feeling of a work of literature
What is a tone?
the attitude a writer takes toward his or her subject or characters
What is foreshadowing
use of clues or hints to suggest events that will occur later in the story
What is symbolism?
person, place, thing, or event that has meaning in itself
What is first person point of veiw
is from the perspective of a character told using pronouns like “I,” “me,” “my,” “we,” “us,” or “our.”
What is second person point of veiw?
the narrator uses “you” to describe the reader’s thoughts, actions, and background or may speak directly to the audience using “you,” “you’re,” and “your.”
What is third person point of veiw?
Is narrated by an external narrator. (He, she, Him, her, they)
What is third person omniscient point of veiw?
The narrator is all-knowing and has access to the thoughts, feelings, and actions of all the characters.
What is third person limited point of veiw?
The narrator only has access to the thoughts and emotions of one character, usually following that character through the story and describing events that they experience.
What is characterization?
the way a writer reveals the personality of a character

figures of speech not literally true
What is imagery?
language that appeals to the five senses

the repetition of consonant sounds in two or more close words or syllables (Peter Piper picked a peck of…)

the act of giving human characteristics to something not human

difference between what is meant and what is said
What is verbal irony?
the difference between what is said and what is written
What is situational irony?
occurs when what happens is very different from what we expected would happen
What is dramatic irony?
occurs when the audience or the reader knows something the character does not
