What is a plot?
Series of related events that make up a story
What is a subplot?
A minor plot that relates in some way to the story
What is an inciting incident?
The event in the story that causes the conflicts
What is resolution?
Conflict is resolved and the story is brought to a close
What is conflict?
A struggle between two opposing forces (external and internal)
What is climax?
Point in the story that creates the greatest suspense or interest
What is exposition?
introductiuon of a story or book, when the characters and settings are first introduced
What is the protagonist?
The main character in a piece of literature
What is theme/central idea
An insight or idea about life
What is the antagonist?
Another character opposing the protagonist
What is the mood of a text?
The overall feeling of a work of literature
What is the tone of the book?
the attitude a writer takes toward his or her subject or characters
What is Foreshadowing
use of clues or hints to suggest events that will occur later in the story
What is Symbolism
person, place, thing, or event that has meaning in itself
Point of View (three types)?
first, second, and third person.
What is first-person?
from the perspective of a character told using pronouns like “I,” “me,” “my,” “we,” “us,” or “our.”
What is second-person?
the narrator uses “you” to describe the reader’s thoughts, actions, and background or may speak directly to the audience using “you,” “you’re,” and “your.”
What is third-person?
narrated by an external narrator. (He, she, Him, her, they)
What is Characterization?
the way a writer reveals the personality of a character
What is Figurative language?
figures of speech not literally true
Imagery
language that appeals to the five senses
Alliteration
the repetition of consonant sounds in two or more close words or syllables (Peter Piper picked a peck of…)
Metaphors
comparison between two unlike things
Idioms
a phrase that means something different that what is actually said
