after a long period of salutary neglect, act followed the sugar and currency act which were also meant to pay for seven year’s war but was much easier to avoid and less noticeable. Colonists were upset they were taxed without representation or consent.

tax on imported goods like paper, paint, oil and tea. Paid for governor and mayor salaries and made them loyal to the crown as colonists previously withheld their salary if they were unhappy with the legislature.
